BACHELOR IN HOMEOPATHY AT CYBERJAYA UNIVERSITY CONTINUES

omeopathy is still relatively unknown as a treatment modality.

Cyberjaya University College of Medical Science is offering a Bachelor of Science in Homeopathic Medicine this December. Homeopathy is the first degree course to be offered under the new Faculty of Traditional and Complementary Medicine. The dean of this Faculty, Dr Ahmad Asmadi Yusof has been involved in meetings with the Ministry of Health and the governing bodies of TCM for the past ten years. Dr Ahmad Asmadi said, “I see so much good in TCM but it is at the same time being exploited by unscrupulous poorly trained practitioners and taught in a haphazard manner by unregistered institutions. It is high time we rescue these therapies from being thus ruined and have a properly designed course which is accredited and teaches the basic medical sciences and medical ethics!”In the case of Homeopathy, the governing body that communicates with the Ministry of Health is called The Malaysian Homeopathic Medical Council (MHMC) and the current president is Dr (H) Haji Mohamed bin Mohd Noor. MHMC was first established on April 11 1993 and is responsible for self legislation of the homeopaths that register with it. In the future it will play an even bigger role when the Traditional and Complementary Medicine act is gazetted in Parliament and a homeopath who is not registered with MHMC will not be allowed a practice license.
When asked why Homeopathy was chosen as the first course to be offered in the new TCM Faculty, Dr Ahmad Asmadi pulled out some facts and figures,
“Homeopathy is currently used in over eighty countries throughout the world, mainly in Europe. It is also highly represented in South America (Brazil, Argentina), India and Pakistan. Although still not very present in North America, constant growth is nevertheless noted." (

Three out of four Europeans know about homeopathy and of these people 29 per cent used it for their own health care. In other words, approximately 100 million Europeans use homeopathic medicines.
Homeopathy is currently recognised by the government of the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, Brazil, Russia among others, and is practised in over 80 countries worldwide, including recently, Japan.

CUCMS president Datuk Prof Dr Abu Abdullah, had signed the MOU on behalf of the university college while the Homeopathic Medical Council (Majlis Homeopathy Kebangsaan Malaysia) was represented by its adviser Dr Mohamed Mohd Noor.
This bachelor programme has been approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and concordant with the Ministry of Health as well as Malaysian Medical Homeopathy Council. Now negotiations are under way to get the course accredited internationally. A twinning program with the Endeavor University of Natural Medicine , Australia was also being planned .
In August 2010, the first intake for all medical students has included Bachelor of Homeopathy. Eight students registered.

This fully accredited course in homeopathy is in line with the policies of the Malaysia Health Ministry to gradually integrate Traditional and Complementary Medicine into Medical Practice in the government and private hospitals.

Those prospective students can apply for PTPTN, Expected fees per annum is 18,000 per year, i.e. a total of RM72,000 for a duration of four years.
